  1. Putting this on here now because who knows how I'll be then. Sterling's cancer has returned and it's in his chest. He's already had an amputation, he's 15, we're not going to do anything drastic. We also don't have to say goodbye quite yet. Here he is yesterday:

If the steroids help him with not coughing, then we'll be doing palliative care and monitoring his quality of life. That's what we're hoping for and that maybe we'll have some months. Especially since the sun is just returning and he loves the sun.

We start them tomorrow because we had to stop another med. He's still doing stuff like furiously zooming at bunnies in the backyard, napping for hours in sunshines, demanding treats, snuggling us both. Except for the cough, he's just a little slower (except if he sees a bun).

Once we see if the steroids work, we'll figure out what quality of life stuff to look out for. Like yesterday the only reason he was being carried was because we let him sniff close to the industrial trash nearby (a special treat) and finally had to remove him.

We just passed 8 years with him in our lives and wow this is really hard and we are both a mess. We knew this was a possibility last summer when he needed the amputation but hoped we'd get a full year at least. But Sterling's just living in the moment:

This is a long thread with updates from the amputation last summer -- starting it with the pickup. It was so hard to get through the healing but also cute and funny and I'm glad we did it because he really bounced back well. Just not as long as we hoped: @ruthbrarian/1545091236477952000

(God what a month, though, between other family stuff I'm not posting here and the death of a second coworker and also some good things that I wish I had more energy to celebrate)

Also if I said I'd do something for you in like the last 6 weeks I am either doing it really well or have not done it at all, feels like that's where things are at. Each week I show up to therapy like "I am not TRYING to live this life but [new rough thing]."
