    1. I often reflect on how weird and inconsistent my upbringing in American religious conservatism was because my parents never fit quite right even if they also bought into really destructive stuff.

    So like -- it was a hard and fast rule that we had to have bachelor's degrees before marrying and be employable. Part of it was that our family has widows and women whose husbands' left them and my parents were realistic.

      and then on the flip side it'd be like "but if you have a husband, you gotta submit to him" ...my sister dodged this by having a wife and I dodged it by marrying a really good person who didn't buy into submission (and I wouldn't be good at it anyway).
