Dog non-update/Ruth update: Besides everything else in the world, this week has been a journey for our hearts that love our little dog. From the devastation Tuesday's "it's cancer"/if we're lucky we can just take the leg off To Wednesday's "ok, it doesn't seem to have spread."
-
I did a lot of reading about tripods/tripawds, saw a lot of cute videos, heard from others who'd been on this journey, that's all been really helpful. Thursday, we started to feel really hopeful about his three-legged future. But we still have to get there.
-
So at 2 in the morning I was up crying about how he's so very very small and the surgery is so very very much. As I shared in the first posts, his heart is good, bloodwork is good, everything points to him being overall a very well dog. But he's so very small.
-
Bless him, he has no idea this is coming. But now our brains have the space for anxiety about the sedation, about the surgery, about his initial responses. The next week or so is gonna be hard. He just dashed to get his morning carrot, hurty leg and all, so that's something <3
-
*gestures* he's just so small
-
brain: why do I feel like this other part of brain: well, Ruth, you've been crying??! everything I know says he has a good chance of a good surgery, but it's still a major surgery with all the risks they have and he's still my little heart.
-
This is my last day of working before surgery because I'd planned to have all next week off for our anniversary.
-
There's some kind of impulse like -- we should do something for Sterling, something before shit gets really really hard. But it's not like that. And shit is already really hard for him because he's limpy and has to take several pain meds not to be in more pain.
-
We do have some extra snacks although we're trying to make sure he eats a lot of regular kibble. In theory, this was gonna be anniversary vacation, so part of what I need to do is set up with a fun sewing project and he'll help in his favorite way -- by napping nearby.
-
He's a dog, Ruth, he has no idea that something scary is about to happen and he won't until Weds morning.
-
He's been in and out of the back yard for sun and is now down in the basement with me having a good snug in his cave bed.
-
managing a dog with a cone/donut is... the worst. We have been trying to give him breaks so he can conduct hygienic needs but he also wants skritches
-
in 2 days I'll figure out what to do about the right sleeve, but I would expect he'd have bandages first anyway.
-
let him out in the yard in his donut, trimmed an inch of the bottom for better dongle access and sloped it up to 1.5 off the back so it doesn't come ALL the way to the tail. I think we're set for now.
-
Vet called to confirm appointment. Honestly that was a relief — I was a tiny bit afraid something would come up to complicate it. We have reconciled ourselves to it as a thing that will help his painful limp/stumbles.
-
she says it's a fairly non-aggressive sarcoma, the kind of thing that has very good survival rates if removed like we're doing with this. 900 days average sounds ...short. But he's 14 so average 900 more days would be like his lifetime.
-
to be recursive sometimes I'm like "he's being a brave little boy" but actually he's just being his usual naive little dumbass self and that's perfect -- he has no idea about tomorrow. @ruthbrarian/1543232920294510593
-
This is probably the hardest part of his day because he's not yet under (they're great at communication and will call us) and so he's just hanging out in one of their crates being sad and lonely and having to wear his donut.
-
still waiting to hear that he's going in for the surgery--they have a queue of animals on surgery day and we don't know where he is in it. They're really good about calling with updates though--like when he's going in, what's been done afterward, when he's starting to wake, etc
-
(our previous experience has only been with teeth cleaning/pulling and biopsy but they were very communicative)
-
just got the call that he's going back for surgery now -- the vet is generally positive though he'll be getting painkillers to get through a few hard days up front. I made him a one-armed t-shirt that matches a jumpsuit I just made myself.
