        1. Friends, I wasn't gonna say anything about this because it felt like bragging. I read Kondo's book a couple years ago. And it was a bit MUCH for me re:minimalism but I really took home what's in this thread. Anyway, last month I gave away the $2000 violin I bought at 16. @teioh/1082926222236016640

I emphasize the cost there because it was HUGE to 16-year-old me. It represented over a year of saving up. I really really loved playing the violin. It brought me joy. But since then, for several reasons, it's not brought me joy. Time. Anxiety. Priorities. etc.

I have not played it since I messed up the bridge (and fixed after) during an anxiety attack back before I had my anxiety treated. Early in Advent, I heard amazing violinists at our church and -- I felt PEACE. I wanted someone else to have this violin and make music.

I've used a pro-active "will this spark joy in my future" to either stop myself from buying or make myself more at peace with not buying things. And yes, I used it on my books. Anyway, Ted's thread is great, as usual, and there can be a joy and peace in it all.
